Our master bedroom has shifted with the needs of our family, but as the place where we spend (or should spend!) 1/3 of our life, Brian and I made a few investments in the bedroom that have been well worth it. Brian spent some time in the world of high-end furniture, so he understands the benefits of a quality bed frame. When we started searching for a new mattress, we decided it was time to upgrade our upcycled/DIY frame as well. We entertained a variety of frames, but ultimately chose Thuma, a low profile wood platform frame using Japanese joinery. It does not require a box spring, has a nice height for storage underneath, and its QUIET! With littles, we are both up and down throughout the night so a quiet frame is crucial for optimum sleep.
On our search for a mattress, we quickly discovered why the best companies now include the opportunity to sleep on the mattress for up to 90 days before returning or exchanging. Mattress shopping is sort of like taste testing. You need a “palate cleanser” between mattresses to get a true feel for whether it is most comfortable, and even then, you are laying on it in the middle of the day in the middle of a large store, so the likelihood of actually falling asleep is slim to none. Unless, of course, you are narcoleptic and can fall asleep anywhere. If that’s the case, you should probably get that checked out, and I am still not convinced it would help you pick the right mattress! But I digress. After an afternoon spent laying on mattresses at Macy’s furniture store, we chose a Purple Hybrid and have been quite happy with it.
For whatever reason, we deal with a lot of dust in our house. We have a brand new HVAC system, new ducting, a MERV13 filter, hardwood floors that are swept daily, and yet, the dust persists. So when I was searching for a rug or rugs for our bedroom, I knew I wanted a washable solution! My bestie got some really cute rugs when she moved into her new place and she introduced me to Mark & Day. They sell washable rugs in so many different designs and colors, there are options for any style. My style is a mashup of mid century modern and boho. I found a great design with some color to pull the whole room together. I really love the “Midwoud Traditional Blush” I chose and best of all, it was under $200 for the 7’10″x10’2″ size I needed to go under the bed and have some on either side of the bed to step out onto.
During our bedroom update before Eloise was born, I decided it was time for new nightstands as well. The ones we were using were heavy and the style didn’t match any of our other furniture. I was looking for something that had legs to bring the eye up and provide a lighter, more airy feel to the space. The drawers are large enough and the height is great for our frame and mattress combo. I can’t tell you how many times I pulled out the measuring tape to make sure I got that right!
Our lamps are actually antiques that I found at the 57th Street Antique Mall in Sacramento. It brings me great joy to mix new and vintage items together. Amazon has some great dupes at a fraction of what these cost me!
Our wall art was a gift I had made for Brian. I think there is value to SOME word art on the walls of your home, just maybe not live, laugh, love. This quote holds special meaning to our relationship, so we post that above our bed as a promise, and a reminder, that love is a choice each and every day.
What do you think? Did I get the mid century modern meets boho vibe right? There are a few more additions I’ll make as I am able: a bench at the foot of the bed, maybe a few throw pillows (can someone please tell me where to put those when we are sleeping!?), some plants. But so far, the space feels so much more cohesive!
