Our nursery closet has been an ever-evolving process. While it is not perfect, the custom build has allowed us the flexibility to organize clothing storage for one baby, then two, and now it holds most of the clothes for three little girls! I took the bones of this build from another mama blogger and customized the space for our needs.
This first picture shows what the closet looked like when we first moved in. The third bedroom in our home was used as an office, library and storage area for the first several months. Once we began creating a nursery space in that bedroom, we began working on the closet as well.
In the second photo, you can see we’ve made some progress. Step one was demo the existing rod and shelf, patch and paint. Once the paint dried, we installed the PAX unit from IKEA. I purchased four drawers and three shelves to complete the unit. We saved the wood closet rod and cut it to size for the hanging space on each side of the PAX. We wanted to use the shelf for shelving, but after demo, decided to use shelving from Home Depot instead. We bought one long board and cut shelves to fit. Brian made bracing to secure the shelves underneath from scrap wood we had on hand.

We created shelves below the closet rod on both sides of the PAX and then began to move-in to the space. I found a wallpaper design I absolutely loved, some baskets, and décor to complete the space.
In the third photo, we’ve transitioned from one girlie to two girlies. To accomplish this, we split each of the drawers down the middle with drawer organizers and each girl has one side of the PAX for hanging clothes. This means we are folding shirts, shorts, pants, skirts, and pajamas.
In the last photo, I hadn’t yet moved all of the newborn clothing into the space yet, but as you can see, I removed the shelves from the right side of the PAX and added a second rod hanging from the upper closet rod. This allows us to hang dresses for our three youngest daughters. Fitting the rest of the clothes into the drawers and baskets has become increasingly difficult as each girlie continues to get bigger, and with it, her clothes!
We did end up adding a dresser into their room to help with clothing storage, so I’ll update the photo when I’ve got things moved around and situated.
All three girls have different sized hangers which helps me as I am hanging their clothes and Evelyn has a second style of hanger for her “play dresses.” It really helps her choose the appropriate clothes each day since she has an opinion about what she wears and LOVES to wear dresses!
